Sears Silvertone 1484 "Twin Twelve" | Fully Restored & Custom Re-Housed | $1,500

The Silvertone 1484 is one of the most underrated American tube amps of the 1960s. A point-to-point 6L6GC design with two channels, and onboard tremolo. This is the famous Jack White amp, also on records from Green Day, Dave Grohl, and The Black Keys. This example has been comprehensively restored and re-housed in custom-built enclosures by Cynaptic Audio.

Electronics Restoration

The chassis is original, cleaned and retained. All electrolytic capacitors have been replaced throughout. The phase inverter circuit was completely rebuilt from scratch, being one of the more age sensitive failure points on this model, and the one most responsible for the tonal inconsistency found in unrestored examples. Output tubes are a new matched pair of JJ 6L6GCs; the preamp section has also been refreshed with a matched triplet of JJ 12AX7 tubes. All original iron is present and confirmed functional with power and output transformers intact.

Tremolo is fully operational and sounds exactly as it should. The onboard reverb circuit has been intentionally bypassed; the original 1484 reverb implementation is of notoriously poor quality, and rather than reproduce a substandard result, the decision was made to leave that circuit out of service. This was an executive call to preserve reliability.

Custom Enclosures

The original cabinet was beyond practical restoration. Both enclosures were built new from scratch:

The head frame is constructed from ½-inch birch with finger-jointed corners, finished in period-correct black tolex. The speaker cabinet is built from ¾-inch pine, loaded with two 12-inch Fender woofers rated at 200W, wired in parallel for a 4Ω load. Grille cloth is a beautifully contrasting charcoal.

The result is a structurally sound, acoustically Balanced enclosure that will outlast any original cabinet of this era.

Who This Is For

This is an excellent player's amp, and a secret weapon for a studio. It is loud, clean at low-to-medium gain, and breaks up beautifully when pushed. The two-channel layout with independent EQ per channel makes it genuinely flexible with rich dynamics. The custom cab and new power tubes mean you're getting reliability alongside the vintage tone; this isn't a display piece, it's ready to rock!
